About the Program
The last two seasons the Hawks have won 52 games and the GCAA Season Championship in 2014-15, finished 2nd in 2015-16, finished ranked 18th in the NJCAA Poll 2014-15 and 22nd in the 2015-16 NJCAA Poll. The Hawks lost the 2nd leading scorer in the country, GCAA Player of the Year, and NJCAA All-American Tyrone Sam who graduated and moved onto to Jacksonville University while also losing 7 other guys off of last year’s team who all graduated and are playing at four year schools now. You would think loosing 8 total would mean no returners, but SGSC returns one of the top freshman in the GCAA (Zaquavian Smith) who scored 33 points in the GCAA Freshman All-Star Game. Qau has committed to Nicholls State University early and will graduate this Spring Semester. SGSC also returns 5 other contributors off of last season’s team and 7 guys who dressed out. Jarred Heard will be a vital part to the team this season with his leadership, defense, passing, and shooting; while Jordan Young and McKinley Chambless (GCAA All-Freshman Game participant) will be key for the SGSC success. Ziare Cook, Shaq Williams, and Khalil Abdullah also return from last season’s roster and could be names to watch this season. SGSC had 3 red-shirts last season and none will be more important than Sheldon Hendrix, a scoring combo guard who is lighting quick. Newcomers will play a factor as well for the Hawks this season. SGSC signed 2 Division I transfers, Tracy Hector, Jr., from Kennesaw State (currently injured- will medical red shirt this season) and DJ Bryant, from Savannah State University who will both be well known names in the program before their careers are over. Add in Freshman All-State high school player O’Showen Williams from Stratford Academy in Macon, GA and Nate Louis from 5A Florida State Champions Poinciana HS and the Hawks have one of the most talented teams they have had in recent memory. SGSC has had back-to-back GCAA Player of the Year and NJCAA All-Americans (Jovante’ Spivey 14-15 and Tyrone Sam 15-16), so that leads one to ask who is next?
“I am excited about the possibilities of this team and look forward to seeing each player grow and improve throughout the season on the court and in the classroom” said Coach Baldwin, who won his 200th NJCAA game as a head coach last season and starts his 11th season as a NJCAA coach this season, 8th at SGSC (Waycross), and 18th year overall in coaching.
